Voices

Bad things run slow
when ahead and fast
when behind

Buck Mulligan

The kind of guy I would gladly
show the way
out the window

Body hide

Turns
hardly
the tide
around
your elbows

A hard rain’s a-gonna fall

With umbrellas
at
a shortage

It doesn't matter —
no one will notice
you cryin’ in the rain.

Evening Pub

A whisky and a pint             please
The pint is for my thirst
The whisky             for my heart

Coming back

Dreams in a dream
but not as much as
going back

It was the year 1965 and afternoons were a happy time

Among other stories from other authors
we read “Mrs Packletide’s Tiger”
and we laughed our souls out

Then we learned about Saki
— our Hector —
and how he had died
on 1916
during the Great War

And although almost fifty years had passed
we learned too that merriment
had a sad shoulder

And so we said goodbye

And we grew old
